Focus on fact finding

Requirement analysis is a key of each project. You should give 100% focus on fact finding stage. Do your best in this phase and always document formally each requirement after well brainstorming and discussion with customers. Try to sign off requirement analysis document with customer, because this will be major check to match your success in the end.

Involve your customers

Do not walk alone through out the project. Arrange punctual meeting with your customer and inform them about project. It is not necessary to involve customer in each phase of project but at least inform them that you working on XYZ phase and facing such such issues. This will boost the confidence of you customer and minimize the error chances of you and your team.

Make time lines

If you fly without map in the air then you will of course lost your destination. Similarly time lines is necessary for each project. Try to make shorter and achievable time lines. If you have big project then divide it on sub projects. Try to restrict your time lines less than 6 months, It will motivate you through out the project.

Keep milestones

Consider milestones as your sub achievement mark in your time line. Keep sensible milestones and provide rewards to your team while achieving any milestone (if possible). This will be good for your team and your customer, as they will see project status towards completion.

Speak regularly

Communicate with every relevant person. It will be best if you create communication plan and sign it off with stake holders. At least route weekly status report to customers and your team. Believe it, that communication plays 60% role in your project success.

Control the scope

Freeze your scope before the execution stage of project. Maintain change process in case of scope change during the project. First inform the customer about impact of the scope change in project, that should cover all aspects financial, resources and time lines. Remember scope slip is a major reason behind project failure.

Maintain quality

Keep the quality of your deliverable as high as possible. Constantly review quality and never let it slip. As to your team to review each others deliverable. Then arrange external reviews to ensure that the quality of the solution meets your customer’s needs.

Issues / Risks

Jump on risks and issues as soon as they are identified. Prioritize and resolve them before they impact on your project. Take pride in keeping risks and issues to a minimum.

Close each deliverable properly

As each deliverable is complete, hand it formally over to your customer. Get them to sign an Acceptance Form to say that it meets their expectations. Only then can you mark each deliverable off as 100% complete.

Make your team

Great projects are run by great teams. Hire the best people you can afford. Spend the time to find the right people. It will save you time down the track. Remember, good people are easy to motivate. Show them the vision and how they can make it happen. Trust and believe in them. Make them feel valued. They will work wonders.
